Objectives:The main objectives of the workshop are to:

1.Train selected REC-level and other regional representatives on disaggregation of data by migratory status, to strengthen their capacity to support further trainings and other activities in pilot countries.
2.Discuss disaggregation needs, interests and capacities of individual countries in Africa, to aid selection of pilot countries for targeted capacity development work.

Participants:RECs migration experts/statisticians from selected RECs, AUC commission/STATAFRIC representatives as relevantand Statistics Sweden representatives.

Background:

While the inclusion of migration in the 2030 Agenda is a key opportunity, it also presents African countries with a series of new data challenges and reporting requirements, especially with the need to disaggregate indicators by migratory status. This means disaggregating several SDG indicators relating to poverty, education, employment, health and other topics by migratory status.

In response to this challenge, GMDAC produced (Leave No Migrant Behind: The 2030 Agenda and Data Disaggregation in 2021), a guide providing user-centric advice on disaggregation of SDG indicators by migratory status. This is aimed at practitioners in government, international organizations or other institutions who work with migration and/or SDG data.

In 2022, GMDAC will begin a more targeted programme of work, in close partnership with government stakeholders, the African Migration Observatory (AMO), STATAFRIC, REC-level representatives, Statistics Sweden and other partners, to roll out the disaggregation guide in selected pilot countries in Africa through capacity development activities. In order to begin this programme of work, this Training of Trainers Workshop will be held, based on the guide to train selected REC-level and other regional representatives to support these later activities, and also serve to help selection of pilot countries.

Beyond the workshop, participants will become key focal points for data disaggregation topics in respective RECs, not only supporting future capacity development activities but also becoming an informal network to assist with knowledge exchange on disaggregation across Africa

Journalists are invited to cover the official opening Training of Trainers Workshop on “Leave No Migrant Behind: The 2030 Agenda and Data Disaggregation Guide”, from 2-5 November 2021, using the available platforms.
