The African Union Commission, through the Pan-African Statistics Programme II (PAS II), proudly announces the publication of the Peer Review Report on Seychelles’ National Statistical System (NSS). This report marks a major milestone in Seychelles’ journey to enhance its statistical governance and deliver reliable, high-quality data for informed decision-making.
Key Insights: Seychelles’ Statistical System Evaluated
Conducted from 12 to 16 May 2025 in Victoria, this peer review brought together government institutions, the Central Bank, academia, development partners, and civil society. Guided by the African Charter on Statistics, the review assessed Seychelles’ NSS across five core dimensions:
- Strengthening organization and coordination of the NSS
- Ensuring an enabling institutional environment
- Enhancing the quality and reliability of statistical outputs
- Modernising statistical processes through digitalisation
- Expanding data dissemination and communication channels
Achievements highlighted in the report
The review underlines several progress areas, including:
- Adoption of the first National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS 2023–2027), aligned with Vision 2033 and Agenda 2063.
- Recognised professional independence of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
- Reinforced partnerships between producers and users of statistics.
- Early steps towards digital transformation and quality assurance frameworks.
Actionable recommendations to address challenges
The report also provides concrete recommendations to strengthen the NSS, such as:
- Accelerating the adoption of the new Statistics Bill to modernise the legal framework.
- Strengthening human resources to tackle the shortage of statisticians and reduce staff turnover.
- Establishing a National Statistics Coordination Committee and sectoral groups.
- Improving IT infrastructure and expanding access to microdata for research and policy use.
