We have to know our users to get them use the statistics we compile. This is the main topic for an event on communication in Casablanca, Morocco on 2. and 3. December. Statistical literacy, search engine optimization and user dialogue are some of the topics to be presented and discussed at the event.
As part of the strategic partnership between the European Union and the African Union for sustainable development, the Pan-African Statistics Programme II (PAS II) is organizing an event on communicating official statistics in Casablanca on December 2–3, 2024. Funded by the European Union, managed by Eurostat, and implemented by Expertise France and STATAFRIC, this event will bring together communication experts from the National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in Africa, plus select technical partners.
Casablanca will host an important event from 2 to 3 December 2024 on how to communicate official statistics differently and effectively to make them more accessible to all users. The event will bring together experts across Africa working in the dissemination, communication, and branding of official statistics.
Eurostat and STATAFRIC are organising this event as part of the second Pan-African Statistics Programme (PAS II) funded by the European Union, managed by Eurostat and implemented by Expertise France.
Engaging users online
The event will explore strategies for tailoring statistical communication to diverse audiences, ensuring that official data is both accessible and relevant. In today’s interconnected world, leveraging online and especially search engine presence is indispensable. Attendees will gain insights into techniques for enhancing the online discoverability of statistical content, ensuring that valuable data reaches users on digital platforms where they are. Discussions will draw from examples in Africa and Europe, highlighting innovative approaches in user engagement and digital content delivery.
Building statistical literacy
With growing recognition of the importance of statistical literacy, the workshop will address methods to simplify complex data and effectively communicate its significance. Participants will get presentations on novel ways of advocating statistics and thereby fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making among stakeholders, from policymakers to the general public.
Learning, discussing and networking
In addition to the expert-led sessions, the participants will also share their experiences, fostering a collaborative environment for exchanging best practices and innovative solutions. There will also be a lot of discussions on the main topics of the event, hopefully resulting in agreements and calls for improvements in communication of statistics all over Africa. One of the goals for the event is also to foster networking across borders to learn from other’s successes and shortcomings.
