The Specialized Technical Group on Classification (STG 12 - Class) of SHaSA II, held its inaugural meeting in Libreville, Gabon from 28th to 30th April 2025. The meeting was organized by the African Union Institute for Statistics (STATAFRIC) in partnership with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and with financial support from the World Bank
The meeting was attended by representatives from: Representatives of AU Member States: Burundi, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Lesotho, Libya, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, South Africa, Togo and Zimbabwe, East African Community (EAC), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Southern African Development Community (SADC), African Union Institute for Statistics (STATAFRIC), UNECA, IMF-AFRITAC (Centre), AFRISTAT, OECD, UNSD, WTO, EU/ Pan-African Statistics Programme II (PAS II).
The main objectives of the meeting of the STG on Classification were to discuss the harmonization of statistical classifications across Africa, share experiences on statistical classifications from countries and organizations and addressing emerging statistical challenges. Being an inaugural meeting, the election of Bureau (office bearers) was done comprising of the Chair, first Vice-chair, second Vice chair, third Vice-chair and a Rapporteur. The meeting also developed a minimum set of classifications to focus on and draw up a clear action plan, within the framework of the ToR adopted during the 2024 CoDGs meeting.
The main areas of discussions during this meeting were; overview of various statistical classifications, new developments in international statistical classification, challenges and issues encountered when using statistical classification, nomenclatures for economic activities (NAEMA) and products (NOPEMA), overview of HS 2022 and Countries and RECs experiences on the use of statistical classifications.
