Upcoming Meetings of STATAFRIC to Advance the Implementation of SHaSA-II
A series of key statutory meetings are scheduled for late 2025 to review progress and steer the implementation of the Second Strategy for the Harmonisation of Statistics in Africa (SHaSA-II). This includes the 7th session of the SHaSA-II Executive Committee (EC), the 19th session of the African Statistical Coordination Committee (ASCC), and the 19th session of the Committee of Directors General (CoDGs).
The 19th CoDGs will be held under the 2025 AU Theme: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”. The session will focus on producing sound statistics to guide decision-makers in building resilient justice systems and will include presenting the SHaSA 2 Mid-Term Review, the status of the African Charter on Statistics ratification, and the establishment of STATAFRIC's new governance board.
Meeting Schedule :
- 7th SHaSA 2 Executive Committee (EC) Meeting: 26 – 29 November 2025, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Objective: To assess the implementation of SHaSA-II at all levels and issue recommendations. The EC will also discuss statistics related to the 2025 AU Theme.
- 19th African Statistical Coordination Committee (ASCC) Meeting: 1 – 2 December 2025, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
- 19th Committee of Directors General (CoDGs) Meeting: 3 – 5 December 2025, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The outcomes of the EC and ASCC meetings will be presented to the CoDGs for consideration and adoption.
Consolidated Outcomes from the 2025 Specialised Technical Groups (STGs)
Throughout the year, the 18 Specialised Technical Groups (STGs) and their subgroups met to address critical statistical domains. Their work forms the technical foundation for the upcoming high-level meetings.
Key Achievements and Outcomes:
The sessions marked significant progress in operationalizing SHaSA-II. Major achievements include:
- Methodological Harmonization: Standardized approaches across statistical domains to ensure coherence and comparability.
- Continental Guidelines: Development of frameworks for informal cross-border trade, migration statistics, and agricultural data.
- Coordination Frameworks: Strengthened collaboration at national and regional levels to streamline statistical activities.
- Technology Integration: Adoption of AI, big data analytics, and satellite imagery to modernize statistical systems.
- Institutional Partnerships: Reinforced cooperation among National Statistical Offices (NSOs), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and Pan-African institutions.
In addition, all STGs successfully established bureaus with five-year mandates, adopted action plans for 2025–2026, and produced minimum sets of priority indicators aligned with both Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
