The African Union Commission, through the Pan-African Statistics Programme II, proudly announces the publication of the Peer Review Report on Mozambique's National Statistical System (NSS). This report is a significant milestone in Mozambique's efforts to enhance its statistical capabilities and deliver high-quality, reliable data for informed decision-making.

Key Insights: Mozambique's Statistical System Evaluated

Conducted from July 1–5, 2024, in Maputo, this peer review brought together diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, development partners, academic institutions, civil society, and the media. Using the African Charter on Statistics as a guiding framework, the review assessed Mozambique's NSS in five core areas:

  • Strengthening Organization and Coordination of the NSS
  • Ensuring a Robust Institutional Environment
  • Enhancing the Quality of Statistical Outputs
  • Streamlining Statistical Processes
  • Expanding Data Dissemination and Communication

Achievements Highlighted in the Report

The review celebrates Mozambique's progress in several areas:

  • A strong legal foundation underpinning the NSS, fostering independence and efficiency.
  • Improved coordination between the INE and other stakeholders, ensuring seamless data flows.
  • Enhanced capabilities in producing and sharing timely and relevant data, supporting both national and international goals such as the Agendas 2030 and 2063.

Actionable recommendations to build on progress

To address current challenges, the report outlines practical steps for Mozambique’s NSS, including:

  • Updating and aligning statistical legislation with global standards.
  • Strengthening human and technical resources for improved data collection and analysis.
  • Increasing user engagement to boost awareness and utility of statistical data.
