Organized by STATAFRIC in accordance with the Strategy for the Harmonisation of Statistics in Africa (SHaSA II), the meeting of the Sub-Group on Migration (STG-8) was held online on November 7, 2025. This was the second meeting of the year, bringing together a diverse group of participants including representatives of AU Member States, AU Regional Economic Communities, Pan-African and Regional Organizations, and international partners.
The agenda of this important session included the presentation and validation of the updated African Union Guidelines on Migration and Displacement Statistics, the validation of the action plan for the migration segment of STG-8, and an introduction to a new continental migration questionnaire. These discussions are crucial for advancing regional cooperation and strengthening migration data systems across Africa.
The meeting fostered active dialogue among participants and underscored the importance of a unified approach to improving the quality, accessibility, and relevance of migration and demographic data on the continent. It also highlighted ongoing collaboration between STATAFRIC, Statistics Sweden, ILO, IOM, and other key partners.
Upcoming activities include the presentation of the Guidelines on Migration and Displacement Statistics to the Committee of Director-Generals of National Statistics Institutes of Africa during their annual meeting in December 2025. Furthermore, the implementation of the 2025–2026 action plan and the deployment of the new continental migration questionnaire will be key steps toward supporting evidence-based policymaking and sustainable development across Africa.
