A concise overview of Africa’s socio-economic trends

The African Union Institute for Statistics (STATAFRIC) is pleased to announce the release of the third edition of the African Statistics Pocketbook 2024, produced with the support of the Pan-African Statistics Programme II (PAS II), funded by the European Union and implemented by Expertise France and STATAFRIC under the supervision of Eurostat.

This new edition updates and consolidates the main economic, social, demographic and environmental indicators for the 55 African Union Member States, offering a clear and accessible snapshot of the continent’s progress towards sustainable development and integration.

An accessible reference for policy and decision-making

The Pocketbook 2024 presents more than forty key indicators aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. It provides comparable data across countries and regions on topics such as GDP growth, employment, education, health, infrastructure, gender equality and environmental sustainability.

Structured in two sections – cross-country statistical tables and country profiles (one page per country) – the publication offers a concise, bilingual (English/French) format designed for policymakers, researchers, students and development partners.

Complementarity with the KeyStat publication

Developed in parallel with STATAFRIC’s KeyStat 2023, the Pocketbook provides a simplified and visual overview of Africa’s socio-economic situation, complementing KeyStat’s more detailed macroeconomic and regional analysis. Together, these two flagship publications contribute to STATAFRIC’s mission of making African statistics accessible, harmonised and useful for evidence-based decision-making.

Available online and in print

The Pocketbook 2024 is available in both print and digital formats on the STATAFRIC website (https://statafric.au.int). It follows the previous editions published in 2018 and 2021, reinforcing STATAFRIC’s commitment to promoting reliable and harmonised statistical information across the African Statistical System.
