November 2025 – STATAFRIC, the African Union’s Statistics Division, announces the official publication of the 2024 edition of the Africa Trade Statistics Yearbook, a continental reference designed to support economic analysis, decision-making and the monitoring of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Produced with the support of the Pan-African Statistics Programme II (PAS II)—funded by the European Union, managed by Eurostat and implemented by Expertise France—this yearbook provides a structured, reliable and harmonised overview of trade flows among the 55 African Union Member States for the period 2019–2023, together with preliminary estimates for 2024.

A strengthened continental database

The 2024 edition builds on a comprehensive update of the AFRICATRADE database, the continental foreign trade data platform managed by STATAFRIC.

This update included:

  • The collection and validation of data series provided by Member States in accordance with the African Data Transfer Protocol;
  • The systematic use of the Validxls tool to ensure consistency, completeness and harmonisation of national datasets;
  • Targeted technical support provided by PAS II to several countries for the extraction and processing of Eurotrace data.

This work has significantly improved data quality, particularly for countries that recently received technical assistance in international trade statistics.

Key trends to inform trade policies

The yearbook provides a detailed analysis of Africa’s trade, covering:

  • Trends in exports and imports by country, product and trading partner;
  • The main contributors to intra-African trade;
  • Structural trends in foreign trade;
  • Trade dynamics over the 2019–2023 period, marked by post-pandemic recovery.

The data underline the growing role of several African economies in global trade and the strategic importance of regional integration in stimulating intra-African flows.

Renewed commitment to reliable data for Africa

The publication of this yearbook marks an important milestone in consolidating a pan-African trade statistics ecosystem, essential for the implementation of the AfCFTA and the continent’s economic integration.

STATAFRIC thanks all Member States for their continued cooperation and reaffirms its commitment to supporting national statistical systems in the production of high-quality data.
