The African Union Commission, under the Pan-African Statistics Programme II, is proud to announce the release of the Peer Review Report on Nigeria’s National Statistical System (NSS). This report marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to enhance its statistical system and improve the quality of official statistics.

Conducted from August 5-9, 2024, at the headquarters of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in Abuja, the peer review engaged key stakeholders from various government agencies, development partners, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and the media. The review focused on five thematic areas based on the principles of the African Charter on Statistics:

  • Organization and Management of the National Statistical System
  • Institutional Environment
  • Quality of Statistical Products
  • Statistical Processes
  • Data Dissemination and Communication

The report highlights the strengths of Nigeria’s NSS, including improved coordination mechanisms, robust statistical outputs, and increased use of modern technology. It also provides actionable recommendations aimed at addressing challenges such as funding constraints, capacity building, and the need for greater engagement with data users and producers.

This review was made possible with funding from the European Union and technical support from STATAFRIC, Eurostat, and Expertise France. We extend our deepest gratitude to the leadership of the National Bureau of Statistics, led by Statistician-General Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, and all stakeholders for their invaluable contributions and hospitality during the review mission.

Next Steps

The findings and recommendations of the report will serve as a roadmap for strengthening Nigeria’s NSS and ensuring its alignment with the African Charter on Statistics and international best practices.
